Combining Animals and Humans

The Associated Press reported recently on scientists who are putting human cells into animals:

Doctors have transplanted pig valves into human hearts for years, and scientists have injected human cells into lab animals for even longer.

But the biological co-mingling of animal and human is now evolving into even more exotic and unsettling mixes of species, evoking the Greek myth of the monstrous chimera, which was part lion, part goat and part serpent.

In the past two years, scientists have created pigs with human blood, fused rabbit eggs with human DNA and injected human stem cells to make paralyzed mice walk.

Particularly worrisome to some scientists are the nightmare scenarios that could arise from the mixing of brain cells: What if a human mind somehow got trapped inside a sheep's head?

The "idea that human neuronal cells might participate in 'higher order' brain functions in a nonhuman animal, however unlikely that may be, raises concerns that need to be considered," the academies report warned.. ("Scientists create animals that are part-human," msnbc.com, Apr. 29, 2005)

Mentioning the decision of an ethics committee at Stanford University to allow researchers to make mice with brains composted almost entirely of human brain cells, the article explained:

Stanford law professor Hank Greely, who chaired the ethics committee, said the board was satisfied that the size and shape of the mouse brain would prevent the human cells from creating any traits of humanity. Just in case, Greely said, the committee recommended closely monitoring the mice's behavior and immediately killing any that display human-like behavior. (ibid.)

Inspired Commentary

Stem cell research continues to sail into uncharted waters. No mention is made of the Creator God, but He will finally close the labs. The earth was once cleansed by a flood, the next time it will be with fire.

But if there was one sin above another which called for the destruction of the race by the flood, it was the base crime of amalgamation of man and beast which defaced the image of God, and caused confusion everywhere. (Spirit of Prophecy, v.1, p. 69).

Allstate to End Florida Policies

Allstate, the second largest property and casualty insurer in the United States indicated recently that it will not renew 95,000 residential homeowner policies and 16,000 commercial policies.

The company will continue to write new homeowner policies where it sees fit and said it took steps to ensure homeowners and businesses won't be left without insurance. People dropped by the company can buy replacement policies through Allstate agents through agreements with Universal and other companies.

"The hurricane season of 2004 was an unprecedented event, but it illustrated to us the reality of hurricane risk in the state of Florida," Allstate spokesman Bill Mellander said. "It altered the world of doing business in Florida."

Allstate company paid about $2 billion in claims after Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne battered Florida, he said. ("Allstate won't renew 95,000 Fla. policies," usatoday.com, May. 19, 2005)

New policies written will likely be more expensive. A National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration forecast predicts and above average 7 to 9 hurricanes for the 2005 season, with two or three likely to hit the United States ("NOAA predicts two or three hurricanes to hit U.S.," cnn.com, May 16, 2005)

Inspired Commentary

The pace of natural disasters is giving companies pause. Maybe it should give more individuals an incentive to consider the potential meaning.

And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. (Luke 21:25-27)

American to Head "Inquisition" Office

VATICAN CITY, MAY 13, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI named the archbishop of San Francisco to succeed him as the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The Vatican announced today that Archbishop William Levada, 68, will fill the vacancy left by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger upon his election to the papacy. . . .

Archbishop Levada has been a bishop-member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith since 2002, and worked under Cardinal Ratzinger as an official of the congregation when the cardinal became prefect in 1981.

Born William Levada in Long Beach, California, June 15, 1936, he attended entered the seminary in Los Angeles.

In 1958, he was sent to further his seminary formation in Rome at the North American College, and received a doctorate in sacred theology "magna cum laude" from the Gregorian University in Rome. ("American Succeeds Pope in Former Office," Zenit.org, May 13, 2005)

Inspired Commentary

While the true significance of the appointment may not be apparent until the passage of time, the appointment is interesting to note in light of the following:

And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. Rev. 13:11, 12

When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near. (Testimonies, v. 5, p. 451)

One might wonder if the presence of an American as the leader of the papal institution once known as the "Inquisition" might facilitate the fulfillment of the above prophecies.
